My stuttering nightmare
There were many dark and depressing days during the eighteen
years when I had a stutter, one however will always stick in my
mind and was probably my worst stuttering experience.
Now I was never what people would call, a sociable person, I
found the whole socialising thing as one huge choir. Everybody else
would seemingly be having fun, whilst I would be there constantly
worrying about my next drinks order or about speaking in general to
other people.
I of course gave it a go but soon realised that I actually
preferred to stay at home and watch sport on the television.
When I was aged about eighteen I decided to go out for
Christmas Eve. I have to say that I do love Christmas, a few days
off work, presents, being around the family and of course
alcohol.
I was therefore in a happy mood and for whatever reason I
always seemed to speak better when I was happy.
I met up with some friends quite early in the afternoon, as we
were planning to celebrate in style. Originally there were just
four of us, we went to a local bar and started to chat whilst
drinking a few beers.
My speech was going very well, hardly a stutter at all and I
was feeling very confident.
Later in the afternoon we all went to a different bar to meet
up with some other people. It was now my turn to order the drinks,
I approached the bar in a positive manner and really believed that
I would be able to speak the words fluently.
One problem however was that the bar was quite empty and that
my friends were all standing around where I was due to order,
therefore they would be able to hear everything that I said.
The barman asked me what we would like to drink and for
whatever reason I could not say any words at all.
My friends did not laugh, well not out aloud anyway but were
more in a state of shock. My best friend then told the barman what
the order was and I attempted to turn a nightmare situation into a
humorous one.
I pretended that I did not care, when in truth I was totally
gutted.
I was now, more than ever, desperate to find a cure for
stuttering as this horrible night out had runied my Christmas
of that year.
I have created a powerful DVD on which I describe the
techniques taught on my popular 1 to 1 Speech
Courses. I also teach how to implement these
techniques and make them a more natural part of a
person’s speech.
